Adjustable Bridges

We craft our hurdy gurdies so that the bridges of are fully adjustable. What do we mean by this, and why is it even needed? Sometimes, in extreme climate changes, the wood of the bridges can shrink or swell a little, changing the way the way the strings press against the wheel.

There are mechanisms built into the bridges which enable the player to make compensating adjustments easily and quickly.

In this close-up, you can see the brass pins which guide the strings into alignment. You use a standard screw driver to raise / lower these into the wood. This effectively raises or lowers the strings on the wheel, changing how loud they are. You will likely never have to worry about this aspect of your instrument, but it's nice to have 'just in case'.  There are also fingerwheels to adjust the main chanter bridge (see video above)
